Storks return to Riesa: New Nest on Sparkasse!

The return of the white storks in Riesa offers reason to be happy for the region's natural observers. The newly built Horst on the roof of the Sparkasse is already inhabited by a white stork. Olaf Gambke, the stork representative in the Altkreis Riesa, confirms this positive development and emphasizes that the early line -up of the nest is a good sign. However, this line -up is overshadowed by the fact that many storks have not yet arrived in the region and that the occupation of the nests overall is low. Exceptions are the Großenhainer Stork, who returned to their old homeland in a double pack on February 23.

The new nest had become necessary after the chimney, which was at risk of collapse, which previously served as a nesting site, had to be torn down. A grid mast will be built as a temporary solution by 2026. It will only be shown from mid -March whether the storks will be brooding successfully, since further storks are expected until then.

The pull routes of the white storks

The white storks already present have flown from the west route from Spain, a strategy that is increasingly chosen by the birds. This route is less energy -consuming and offers a better food supply. According to NABU, almost 75 % of the German white storks move to the Middle East and on to Tanzania or South Africa on the eastern route. As a rule, the storks cover 150 to 300 kilometers a day.

The choice of the route is a behavioral adjustment to the climatic conditions. In August, the young storks begin to explore their surroundings before making their way to Africa, often regardless of their parents. During the flight, the storks use warm air flows for an energy -saving gliding.

Despite their adaptability, the storks are exposed to numerous dangers. This includes collisions with electrical overhead lines, hunting, poisoning and loss of rest areas. The observation and analysis of the approaches are crucial to identify these dangers and to promote protective measures.
