Schwesig and Amthor: Political power games according to the election disaster in MV!
Schwesig and Amthor: Political power games according to the election disaster in MV!
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Deutschland - The Bundestag election has a massive impact on politics in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) is traded for significant top jobs in Berlin, since the SPD has to be led from a historically poor result. Lars Klingbeil, the chairman of the SPD, announced a personnel turning point that could also affect Schwesig. Rumors about a possible successor from Co party chairman Saskia Esken, should it resign, persistence. Nevertheless, Schwesig emphasizes: "My place is in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. I am very happy to be Prime Minister".
Until her cancer in 2019 was Schwesig deputy federal party and government heads. In the meantime, Philipp Amthor (CDU) is also possible in the house, especially after the victory of Friedrich Merz. Amthor is traded as a candidate for a ministerial office if Carsten Linnemann should switch to a new government. However, he expresses skepticism about the existing speculation and emphasizes that it must first be about the matter and only then about the people.
Future Member of the Bundestag from MV
Future representation of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in the Bundestag will change. In the future, the country will only be represented by 13 MPs, which is due to a voting right reform. This reform means that not every constituency winner automatically receives a place in the Bundestag. For the AfD candidate Steffi Burmeister, who won in constituency 14 (Rostock and the surrounding area), this means that she does not move to Berlin.
Here is an overview of the future members of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania:

criticism of Schwesig and the SPD
The political tensions also become clear by the criticism of Philipp Amthor. He expresses doubts about Schwesig's handling of the Gas pipeline Nord Stream 2 and describes her change from a "Russian advertising icon" to a "alleged mother Teresa" as unbelievable. Amthor calls for Schwesig to explain the "submissiveness of the SPD Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania to Russian corporations" and expects new details on the cooperation between the state government and the pipeline operator. In this context, the establishment of the MV climate foundation is also discussed, which was financially supported by the construction of the pipeline and previously approved by the state parliament.
In addition, current surveys show a clear loss for the SPD in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The party could lose almost 20 percent in the next election and there is a risk of a possible defeat, since the AfD is currently the strongest party in surveys. In the last election in 2021, the SPD still achieved 39.6 percent, now it only sees itself at 20 percent. The Secretary General of the SPD, Julian Barlen, blames the unpopularness of the federal government for the falling values. While the AfD is 25 percent, the left could fail at the five percent hurdle, and the Greens also see around five percent in a narrow race.
The political future of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania remains exciting, while the SPD and its leadership figures have to adapt to the challenges of the upcoming elections.
