Solidarity for Ukraine: 2000 Berliners show flag at the Brandenburg Gate!
At the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, an impressive demonstration for solidarity with Ukraine took place on March 11, 2025. Under the motto "Now now: #Stangrithukraine - for all of our freedom and security!" gathered between 1500 and 2000 people to set a strong sign of support. The demonstration was organized by the campaign organization Campact and the German-Ukrainian association Vitsch.
In the speeches of the event, representatives of the CDU, SPD, Greens, civil society and the Evangelical Church expressed themselves. Christoph Bautz, Managing Director of Campact, emphasized the need to support Ukraine, and criticized former US President Donald Trump. He made it clear that to be left-progressive, including support for arms deliveries to Ukraine. His criticism was particularly directed against the Left Party, which was not represented at the rally.
political positions
CDU member of the Bundestag Roderich Kiesewetter described Trump's betrayal on Ukraine as one reason why Germany must continue to stand together. Anna-Nicole Heinrich from the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) pointed out that the war in Europe also affects the security of the continent. The Green Group leader Katharina Dröge illustrated the strength of the people in Ukraine and the need not to confront a defensive war with pacifism.
The peace movement has changed significantly in parallel to this demonstration in recent years. According to Larissa Daria Meier, conflict researcher at the Institute for Interdisciplinary Conflict Research, the movement is now strongly shattered compared to the more uniform protests of the 1980s. She speaks of a so -called "peace mobilization" in which different groups bring in their different perspectives and concerns.rallies and mobilization
The protests against the war show a picture of a population that works for peace and diplomacy, while different interest groups are inherent in the ceremony. On Thursday, thousands of people in Berlin already demonstrated for peace, with the number of participants between the initiators and the police fluctuated. Meier pointed out that the current discourse is characterized by a non -partisan consensus that supports military support for Ukraine.
The peace movement also dealt with topics such as freedom and peace during Corona pandemic. Several groups within the protests try to differentiate themselves from the anti-corona networks, while others are open to new coalitions. This area of tension is used by various actors who try to exploit dissatisfaction among the population, especially with regard to rising energy prices.
The developments show that the fragmentation of the peace movement has already started with the annexation of the Crimea in 2014 and continues to this day. While significant members of the classic peace movement call for the demonstration of origin, there are always counter events in which alternative perspectives are propagated.
The events of the past few days illustrate how important it is to find a common voice for peace and security. At the Brandenburg Gate and beyond, it becomes clear that the commitment to Ukraine and for peace in Europe remains a central challenge and responsibility that many citizens actively act.
