Fire risk in Grevesmühlen: Police investigate after alleged arson!

In the past few days in Grevesmühlen, several fires have occurred that alert the local population. The fire brigade was alerted on Thursday evening at 10 p.m. after residents perceived smoke from a forest between Degtower Weg and the pirate Open Air. When the emergency services arrived, the fire had already spread over several meters. In the immediate vicinity there are not only residential buildings, but also a color trade and the popular leisure area, which made the situation particularly precarious. The police start from arson because the perpetrators apparently set fire to old car tires, like the Ostsee Zeitung reported.

In addition to this incident, there was a major alarm for the fire brigade and police in the early morning hours of the same day. At around 6 a.m., a fire was reported in a gazebo at Lake Ploggens, which completely destroyed the arbor. Shortly afterwards, a second gazebo and a stack of wood burned in a garden on Lake Vielbeck. Fortunately, there were no personal injury. The amount of the damage incurred is still unclear and the criminal police have started the investigation into the cause of the fire. Witnesses are asked for relevant information, especially since there have been several fires in gazebos in Grevesmühlen in the recent past, such as the Nordkurier Notice.

haunks of arson

In the past few days there have been a total of three alleged arsons that citizens make concerned about their security. In addition to the fire in the forest and the gazebos, there was also a fire in a public toilet in the club house and a tree next to the Nikolaikirche. All incidents took place in the late afternoon or early evening and raise questions about crime in the region.

Statistics of the Federal Environment Agency on forest fires in Germany show that a total of 1,059 forest fires were registered in 2023, a reduction compared to 2022. Nevertheless, the average forest fire area of 1.2 hectares per fire is the five highest value since statistics. In most cases, the fires were caused by human action, whereby negligent behavior was decisive in many cases. Especially younger and light needle forests are particularly at risk, and experts recommend conversion to mixed forests as a possible prevention measure, such as the Website of the Federal Environmental Office illustrated.
