Bremen in the e-charging network: fourth place and 12.3 e-cars per charging station!

Electromobility is gaining momentum, and the figures prove this impressively. Reported on November 4, 2025 butenunbinnen.de that Germany now has over 180,000 public charging points for electric cars. Of these, around 44,000 are fast charging points, which are crucial for long journeys and fast charging. Bremen occupies a remarkable place and remains in fourth place in a national comparison.

There is currently a ratio of 12.3 electric cars per charging station in Bremen. For comparison: Lower Saxony has a slightly harder time with 17.5 electric cars. The data comes from the automobile association VDA and provides a clear overview of the development of the infrastructure for electric vehicles in Germany. This development is necessary because the number of electric cars, including battery-powered (BEV) and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV), currently stands at more than 2.8 million.

Growth in the charging network

But what does the current development in the charging network really look like? An evaluation by the VDA has shown that the number of publicly accessible charging points was 172,150 on July 1, 2025, which represents an increase of 29,357 charging points compared to the previous year, but the pace of expansion has slowed. Last year, over 45,000 new charging points were added.

Fast charging points in particular are in demand, as shown by the 36% increase in newly added points. Further interesting figures reveal that 32% of communities in Germany still cannot offer a public charging point and 65% are without a fast charging point.

Regional differences

Heilbronn has established itself as a leader in Germany, with a peak value of 4.8 electric cars per charging station. Emden and the Oder-Spree district follow in second and third place. It is noteworthy that North Rhine-Westphalia has gained the most fast charging points - 2,226 in total.

Cologne has also established itself as a model region in this development, as the city recorded the largest increase in fast charging points with a total of 215. This means that the population of Cologne will have easier access to charging infrastructure for electric vehicles, which is likely to be particularly crucial for the future acceptance of electric cars. A good hand is now required at the city and state level to further expand the network.

The latest developments in the e-charging network are promising and the demand for electric vehicles is increasing. It remains exciting to see how the infrastructure develops and whether the goals for promoting electromobility can be achieved. Also the numbers vda.de show that the charging capacity per electric car has already increased and there is potential for further growth. Each of us can contribute to ensuring that electromobility becomes even more important in our region.
