Bremerhaven in transition: Karstadt demolition begins, new Novo in sight!
Something is happening in Bremerhaven: the demolition of the historic Karstadt original building began on Tuesday. After many delays, which were caused, among other things, by discoveries of pollutants such as asbestos, the dismantling should be completed by the end of 2026. The area, which the city acquired for over 15 million euros, will be converted into a new, six-story building called “Novo”, which will house a youth hostel and a modern library. The final construction is scheduled to be completed by 2029, as butenunbinnen.de reports.
The original construction dates back to the 1950s, while the rear part of the building was built in the 1970s. The project has received mixed reactions from the general public. While the Left supports urban development, many citizens criticize the inadequate involvement of local residents in the planning phases. “There is something to be done,” says the opposition, who express doubts about compliance with the planned time and cost plan. The estimated cost of the new building is now around 90 million euros, an increase from the initial 75 million euros.
Investors and citizen participation in focus
The city administration decided to develop the project independently after difficulties arose in finding investors. This decision has been criticized by the opposition, which is calling for greater involvement of private investors. Project manager Jan-Peter Heß, however, emphasizes that asbestos was found in many unexpected places during the demolition work, which further slowed construction progress.
Another point of contention is the question of citizen participation. Many Bremerhaven residents would like to have more of a say, especially at a time when so many fundamental things are changing for the city. “This should ultimately be of benefit to everyone living here,” says a concerned resident.
The city has high hopes for the construction of the “Novo” building. Will the city manage to implement the plans on time and thus open a new chapter in Bremerhaven's history? The next few years will show whether the city has a good hand in developing the area or whether unexpected difficulties will continue to arise.
The people of Bremerhaven live and work in a time of change, and while the project manager is confident, the residents have mixed feelings about the coming changes. Are the promises kept? The answers will come to the city over the next few years.
