German mobile games are booming: 3 billion euros in sales in 2024!
The world of mobile games is blossoming! In 2024, sales of game apps in Germany will exceed the 3 billion euro mark. However, the market also shows its double-edged face: While revenues are stagnating, there is a decline of 300,000 people playing, which pushes the total share to currently 24.3 million German mobile gamers.
What about the demographic situation? The average age of players is 39.2 years, with a highest proportion of 22 percent being between 10 and 19 years old. Surprisingly, around 15 percent of mobile gamers are over 60 years old. Female gamers are in the majority at 53 percent, meaning men (47 percent) play a less balanced role.
Sales and gaming behavior
The mobile games market has grown by a whopping 63 percent since 2019, although there are general declines in other gaming areas. A decline in sales of PC and console games of 17 percent to 921 million euros was noted, as was a loss in the hardware sector of 10 percent to 2.9 billion euros. In contrast, gaming app revenue accounts for a huge portion, with 98 percent generated through in-app purchases.
As for the future of the market, the preference for free-to-play mobile games seems to be leading the way. This leads to a significant decrease of 69 percent in purchases of individual game apps since 2019. Sales from online gaming services on smartphones and tablets are 57 million euros, while sales generated through purchases are only 4 million euros.
