Volunteer seniors in Bremerhaven: Helpers for small repairs!

In Bremerhaven, the name *Anti-Rust* has long become a synonym for neighborhood help. The senior volunteers in this service provide valuable support with small repairs and not only bring light into the darkness, but also joy into the hearts of people in need. As *buten un binnen* reports, the motto “Growing old without getting rusty” contributes significantly to this inspiring mission.

With a dedicated team of around 25 seniors between the ages of 65 and 80, the helpers are in action almost every day. Each of them has their own stories and ties to Bremerhaven. A typical day might include replacing a leaky faucet or hanging curtains. This day was also experienced by 75-year-old Helmut Purwin, who needed support due to a below-knee amputation. Frank Martin, 66 years old and new to the team at the beginning of the year, took over replacing a light bulb in Purwin's hallway. After the work was done, the two took the time to chat comfortably over a cup of coffee. Interestingly, the two had a reunion after more than 40 years, as Purwin was formerly an instructor at the Naval Operations School, where Martin completed his electrician training.

The work done goes beyond technology. “We are not just craftsmen, we also listen and ensure that the operations create a positive atmosphere,” says Martin. It's often the little things that play a big role in everyday life. “Once there was a rush for toilet seats that were on special offer,” adds Helmut Purwin with a smile. Such strange assignments are part of the daily life of seniors who willingly invest their time and energy.

The organization behind the service, the Bremerhaven Care and Recreation Works e.V., not only offers a platform for these seniors, but also ensures the necessary support for their activities. This connection is crucial to ensuring the continued operation of *Anti-Rust* and making the community grow closer together.

The help of seniors has not only improved the quality of life of the people in Bremerhaven, but has also developed a strong sense of community. “We build bridges that bring a little more light and joy to people,” summarizes a long-standing member of the team. It is initiatives like these that show that you can achieve a lot even in old age if you have the right attitude and are willing to give your time to others.
