Eisbären Bremerhaven beaten again: turnovers cost a lot!
In a disappointing match in the 2nd Basketball League ProA, the Eisbären Bremerhaven suffered a bitter 67:84 defeat against BG Göttingen today. This defeat marks the third defeat of the current season for Bremerhaven, who were level on points with Göttingen before the game; both teams had 16 points each and had eight wins from ten games. But the polar bears were unable to take advantage of the good starting position.
After the game, coach Steven Esterkamp left no doubt that the high number of turnovers (13 in total) and his team's lack of discipline were the decisive factors in the defeat. “We gave up too many easy points and were simply not good enough defensively,” said Esterkamp. The poor accuracy, especially from the three-point line, also contributed significantly to the defeat. In the first quarter, the Eisbären quickly fell behind and allowed Göttingen an eight-point lead, which they expanded to 18 points by halftime.
The gameplay in detail
However, the game initially started promisingly for Bremerhaven when Till Isemann scored the first points. In the first quarter, however, the polar bears' inefficiency quickly became apparent: five turnovers and a weak shooting rate put a strain on the balance. In the second quarter, Göttingen increased the gap to 25:34, and at halftime Bremerhaven was already behind 33:51.
The start of the second half was disastrous for the Eisbären, who were unable to score a single point in the first four minutes. After the third quarter, Göttingen were already ahead 74:45 and the game seemed decided. New signing Evan Walshe had no significant influence on the game despite his first appearance, while Elijah Miller, who leads the assist statistics, only contributed two points. The highly praised Daniel Kirchner from Göttingen, on the other hand, shone with a strong performance and contributed significantly to his team's victory.
On the current situation of polar bears
The Eisbären Bremerhaven basketball club, an integral part of the German basketball landscape since its founding as a professional division of the BSG Bremerhaven club, is currently playing in the ProA after being relegated from the BBL. In 2020, the club even waived the right to promotion to the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) in order to ensure planning security. Since then, the club has undergone a consolidation process and the leadership has reorganized. Nils Ruttmann is now the sole responsible managing director of the club.
Despite the current difficulties and the painful defeat, it is to be hoped that the Eisbären Bremerhaven can learn from this situation and make the coming games more successful. The sport of basketball thrives on ups and downs, and with a little luck and a better defensive performance, the next game could take a different turn.
The next challenges are already waiting: After the third defeat in a row, the Eisbären have no choice but to refocus and eliminate the mistakes in order to bring the season to a positive conclusion.
