Black widows in the harbor: spider alarm in Bremerhaven!
An unexpected discovery is causing a stir in Bremerhaven: two spiders were spotted at the car terminal, which presumably belong to the dreaded black widow genus. Loud buten and within The port authorities immediately cordoned off a large area of the affected area in order to minimize possible risks. The spiders were discovered under container fixing material, which stopped the unloading of a freighter.
Fortunately, port captain Stephan Berger made it clear that there was no danger to the employees or the population. The employees were and are not in danger and an evacuation of the ship is not necessary. The crew stays on board and appears calm as they already have experience with similar situations. “There is no reason to panic,” said Berger. “We have everything under control.”
Cleaning measures and precautions
In order to contain the spider population, the affected container ship will be cleaned with special equipment in the coming weeks - similar to the fight against the oak processionary moth. The freighter will be moved to another pier and the cleanup is expected to take three weeks. Two decks of the ship are sealed airtight so that the spiders cannot spread n-tv reported.
The exact circumstances of how the spiders got on board are still uncertain. Last year, due to a similar incident, the ship “Arc Commitment” had to remain in port for around two months to be cleaned by pest controllers. Before arriving in Bremerhaven, the crew had already pointed out a possible infestation, which was treated in the previous port in Gdansk. Apparently some spiders survived this treatment, which explains the current problem, informs District newspaper.
What are Black Widows?
Black widow spiders are considered one of the most poisonous spider species in the world; their venom can cause serious health problems in humans, such as paralysis. While such arachnids are not uncommon in the holds of container ships, the authorities are now paying particular attention to the situation. What is particularly worrying is that no further spiders were found during an inspection, which increases the risk of uncontrolled spread.
In summary, it can be said that those responsible have taken all the necessary precautions to ensure the safety of employees and the public. Cooperation with the authorities is ongoing and all forces are mobilized to ensure a smooth process to combat the problem.
