Windjammer Festival Sail: 250 ships & Steinmeier on board!

There is a lot to celebrate in Bremerhaven today: After a break of ten years, the Windjammer Christmas, also known as “Sail 2025”, has finally started again. Around 250 ships, including sailing ships, steamers and motor ships, are expected in the port city. The opening parade will be led by the sailing training ship “Gorch Fock”, on board which Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is also staying. Steinmeier will officially open the annual celebration in the afternoon. The parade begins with the sailing ship “Alexander von Humboldt II” and is accompanied by numerous leisure boats. According to sat1regional.de, a total of around 1.2 million visitors are expected during the festival.

The first few days of Sail 2025 will feature a “Sail-In” parade, where more than 100 ships are expected. The colorful collection of lucky charms on the water will delight the public from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. A special highlight of the program are the diverse open ship offers, which are offered daily from 12 p.m. Music lovers will be entertained by live acts such as Ronan Keating, No Angels and Johannes Oerding on various stages, while the Medieval-style Freibeuterdorf invites you to take part in activities and market stalls, as NDR reports.

Diverse events and attractions

Sail 2025 is more than just a ship festival. Comprehensive activities are offered for visitors. A big attraction will be the “buccaneer village”, which appeals to all age groups with its medieval atmosphere, market stalls and hands-on activities. There will also be trips on the Weser with sailing ships and motorboats to extend the maritime experience in a wonderful way. On Saturday evening, those present can look forward to an impressive laser show at 10:50 p.m., followed by a spectacular fireworks display at 11 p.m. A highlight – especially during this special time – will be the commitment to inclusion. The Inclusive Sailing for All association offers trips for wheelchair users so that no one is left out.

Security measures and awareness

There are also important safety initiatives as part of Sail 2025. For the first time, an awareness team, marked by purple vests, will be deployed to ensure the well-being of guests and to combat aggressive behavior. The event thus sends a strong signal for greater safety and support for all visitors, which is particularly important these days.

The Sail not only delights the people of Bremerhaven, but also attracts onlookers from many regions. Not only the traditional windjammers are very popular, but also modern cruise ships that are part of this maritime spectacle. Historically valuable expedition ships will also be represented in the impressive fleet, and the sea journey will remain a fixed highlight for all maritime enthusiasts until Sunday.

Don't miss this! Be part of this unique festival that fills the hearts of visitors with maritime flair and unforgettable experiences, and enjoy the beauty of the ships and the joy of the sea!
