On Sunday evening, November 3rd, 2025, it was once again turbulent at Bremen Airport. Flight operations had to be stopped at short notice due to a drone sighting in the immediate airspace of the airport. Loud NDR Takeoff and landing operations were interrupted at around 7:30 p.m. for safety reasons.
A little later, at around 8:15 p.m., air traffic resumed. But the sighting has already had an impact: a flight from London to Bremen was diverted and four other departures had to be delayed by up to 40 minutes. The identity of the drone pilot remains unclear, but an eyewitness reported the drone and a police patrol also confirmed its presence on site.
Review of drone sightings
The incidents at Bremen Airport are part of a larger problem affecting German aviation. Air traffic was repeatedly interrupted by drone sightings. There was recently a similar incident at Berlin's BER airport on Friday evening. In Germany, drone flights are prohibited within 1.5 kilometers of airports - a violation can be punished with prison sentences of up to ten years. The State Criminal Police Office in Lower Saxony is now also investigating suspected Russian drones that were spotted over critical infrastructure.
In 2025, reports of drone sightings in Lower Saxony increased sharply. Since the beginning of the year, four incidents have been recorded that have led to air traffic disruptions. There is a strict ban on flying drones at Bremen Airport, and the police are calling on residents to help.
The security situation remains critical and the authorities are called upon to clarify the causes of these incidents. It remains to be seen whether the new technologies and their control can offer a solution.
