Airport chief promises: Frankfurt raises punctuality to a new level!
In a current statement, airport chief Stefan Schulte assured that a noticeable improvement in punctuality at Frankfurt Airport will be sought for the coming summer. Schulte said that the goal was to regain the punctuality level of before corona pandemic, despite an increase in flight movements by around 5 percent. One wants to make sure that about 80 percent of the machines start and land on time.
To achieve these goals, Fraport has been fixed operational problems that occurred in the course of pandemic and provided sufficiently trained staff. However, Schulte points out that future challenges in airspace are to be expected. The airspace is increasingly narrowed by military exercises, airspace barriers and an increasing flight. Despite these difficulties, Schulte is optimistic that punctuality can be improved.
Current delays and comparison with other airports
In the past, Frankfurt am Main (EDDF) was the most unpunctual airport in Germany. Between 2020 and 2024, the average departure delay here was 23.36 minutes, which corresponded to a total of over 320,000 hours delay. These delays are due to the high passenger volume and the international turnstile character of the airport. In comparison, other airports show the following average departure delays: Airport Th>

future developments and terminal 3
In addition to punctuality, the opening of a new terminal, Terminal 3, is prepared at Frankfurt Airport. This is built in the south of the airport and is intended to offer a capacity of 19 million passengers per year. The commissioning of the new terminal is planned for Easter 2026. The move of the airlines from Terminal 2 will take place in "Two to four waves" and accelerates the closure and renovation of Terminal 2 over the next few years.
Schulte also criticized the insufficient number of pilots and missing uniform IT solutions in European flight protection, which were identified as the main reasons for the delays in aviation. The close airspace is considered central to the challenges that need to be mastered in order to ensure further optimization of the airspace organization.
The statements and plans by Stefan Schulte find an important place compared to the general developments in air transport. Further information on the punctities at other European airports can be viewed at Eurostat website
