CDU blocks redesign: Edeka in Sottrum remains unchanged!
On May 14, 2025, a meeting of the Committee for the Environment, Paths and Nature took place in the municipality of Sottrum. The focus of the discussion was suggestions for the redesign of public areas, among which there were also measures for an area north of the Edeka market. However, this proposal was rejected. The planned measures included the installation of a water feature, tables, seating as well as lighting and planting two trees. The costs for the project were at an upper limit of 25,000 euros, which the CDU indicated.
Gerd Helms from the CDU described the sum as too high in the current financial situation of the municipality. Marion Dierks also expressed concerns about the safety of the scheduled leisure area next to the footpath. Community director Holger Bahrenburg proposed a solution in the form of metal bollards as a barrier. Ultimately, the proposal was transferred to the administration with four votes against the CDU.
progress and agreement on other areas
The construction work of the project carrier has already progressed, so that the desired redesign of the area should be carried out in accordance with them. A citizen expressed the desire to interrupt the long building front of the Edeka market. While the suggestions for the area north of the market were not accepted, there was agreement on the second area, the "old market square". There, stones are to be balanced or as a resting place, an application that was submitted by the Power Men Group of the Sottrum gymnastics club in April. The procurement and setting up of these stones are through the association, whereby further details are to be clarified in coordination with the administration.
In a broader context, the lack of living space in Germany is an urgent problem. Corona pandemic has not reduced the attraction of large cities, despite the high property prices. In view of the lack of affordable living space, the densification is increasingly regarded as a solution. Especially in retail, the increase in grocery stores and discounters, a great potential is seen that could contribute to the creation of up to 400,000 apartments. This type of vertical compression allows to use existing areas more efficiently and at the same time create new living spaces without sealing valuable green areas, such as DetailsOrtSottrum, DeutschlandQuellen
