Germany wins 2-0 against Luxembourg – Woltemade shines in the World Cup fight!

On November 16, 2025, the German national team took to the pitch at the Stade de Luxembourg to compete against Luxembourg in the World Cup qualifiers. Referee John Brooks kicked off the game at 8:30 p.m. and the atmosphere in the stadium was great with around 9,500 spectators. The pressure was enormous for national coach Julian Nagelsmann's team, because a win was necessary to maintain their chances of direct qualification for the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

After a strong phase in October, in which the German team recorded two nil-nil victories, the team was top of their group and determined to maintain this position. But not everything went according to plan. Joshua Kimmich and Nico Schlotterbeck were unable to play due to injuries, but traveled with the team. Captain Jonathan Tah took responsibility on the pitch while Goretzka was shown a yellow card in the first half - a real warning sign for the German defence.

Poor performance in the first half

The first 45 minutes were sobering for the German fans. When Luxembourg had the better chances, it became clear that something was wrong. With a high error rate in building up the game and difficulties in the offensive game, Germany struggled particularly with exploiting opportunities. Florian Wirtz had the first opportunity, but his shot was defused by Luxembourg goalkeeper Anthony Moris. A dangerous back pass from Tah almost led to a goal, which further increased the pressure on the German team.

In the first half, Luxembourg played more cleverly offensively, but was unable to reward themselves with a goal. This should change in the second half. Nagelsmann had not made any changes at half-time - a sign of his trust in the existing players and the hope for improvement.

Turnaround in the second half

And indeed, the German team came out of the dressing room transformed. Nick Woltemade, who proved to be a real stroke of luck, scored the first goal in the 49th minute after being ideally set up by Leroy Sané. Just twenty minutes later, Woltemade left no stone unturned and scored a brace to make it 2-0. After this goal, Luxembourg's resistance was broken and Germany confidently played down the rest of the game without posing any further danger.

With this victory, Germany celebrated their fourth success in a row and consolidated their position in the group. This was an important step for the hopes of qualifying for the World Cup - the last group game is on November 17th in Leipzig against Slovakia, where Germany could advance with a draw. Nevertheless, the memory of the first leg, which ended 0-2, should remain in the back of your mind.

The positive overall balance of the German national team this year is impressive: 10 of 16 international matches were won, which shows that the team is on the right track. More information about the national team's last games and statistics can be found at fussballnationalteam.net.
