Figure skating with 80: untamed dreams in Ice Aged unfolded!
Oberstdorf, Deutschland - The documentary "Ice Aged", directed by Alexandra Sell, celebrated its theatrical release in Germany on April 10, 2025. The film accompanies six older people on their remarkable path to the Hobby World Cup in figure skating, which takes place annually in the picturesque Oberstdorf. The protagonists, whose age varied between the mid-50s and 80s, show admirable determination, while they are preparing for the most important competition for hobby ice skaters.
The filming extended over a period of three years, starting in 2020 and ending with the World Cup 2022. During this period, the protagonists overcome many hurdles, including the challenges that the Covid 19 pandemy brought with them. These experiences made it possible for artists to demonstrate an impressive courage and perseverance, even if ice halls were closed and competitions were canceled.
protagonists with special stories
The most remarkable personalities is 73-year-old Roland Suckale, who becomes active again in figure skating after almost 50 years. The 77-year-old Toos van Urk from the Netherlands, who could never follow the figure skating in childhood, is also the focus. The stories of Elena Rickmann, who could not implement her funeral moments in the Soviet Union, and Linda Bernard, a British champion in the couple run, who returned to sport after 50 years, are just as impressive. Other protagonists are the 70-year-old Sissy Krick, who acts as a judge, as well as Nadja Colbourne and David Marzell, who also appear in the film.
A central theme of the film is the message that it is never too late to realize childhood dreams. "Ice Aged" inspires and encourages people of all ages to pursue their own dreams, even if they encounter challenges. The concept of the film was originally created during the work on Alexandra Sell's feature film "The Beginner", which deals with a similar topic.
competition and emotions
The Adult Figure Skating Competition, the largest hobby competition in figure skating worldwide, is the focus of the narrative. The film not only documents the training sessions, but also focuses on the emotional highlights that the protagonists experience during their performances. This combination of training, discipline, self -doubt and personal stories creates a profound connection to the passion for figure skating.
The premiere of "Ice Aged" took place on October 23, 2024 at the International Hof Film Days, followed by an international premiere on November 14, 2024 at Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival. The film has a term of 110 minutes and is classified by the FSK with approved access.
Production was led by Annekatrin Hendel and received extensive funding from various institutions, including the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg and the film funding facility. "Ice Aged" promises an event for the senses and an inspiring journey that will sound after the credits.
