The excellence strategy in detail
The Berlin University Alliance is funded as part of the excellence strategy, which was launched by the federal and state governments in 2016. The aim of this strategy is to strengthen the German science location in international competition and increase its visibility. The excellence strategy finances both the cluster of excellence and excellence universities. These funding lines should contribute to the development of internationally competitive research fields and promote interdisciplinary research projects.
Since November 1, 2019, Berlin University Alliance has received up to ten million euros in funding annually, with a funding duration of initially seven years. The possibility of extending by another seven years is due to a continuation application. The interdisciplinary orientation of these projects is an essential part of the concept that focuses on the cooperation between scientists and the training of young people.
look into the future
In 2026, the excellence strategy will be significantly further developed, with annual fundamental allocations of up to 539 million euros for up to 70 cluster of excellence. The federal government contributes 75 percent in the financing, while 25 percent are taken over by the seating countries of the Cluster of Excellence or universities. The selection of the clusters and universities is carried out by a scientific selection process, carried out by the DFG and the Science Council, which also guarantees the quality assurance of the funded projects.
In the coming years, important deadlines for submitting applications and self -reports will be set to initiate the second funding phases of classic clusters of excellence and universities. The Berlin University Alliance and its members are optimistic about the future, supported by a well thought -out strategy and a strong network of interdisciplinary cooperation.
