Investigations against Mayor Wright: Traffic attempt causes excitement!

The Gießen public prosecutor's investigation against Mayor Alexander Wright (Greens) has resumed the system ring in the context of a controversial traffic attempt. This decision is made after an advertiser had filed a complaint in autumn 2024 against the prior ceasing of the investigation. The traffic attempt was declared illegal by the administrative courts in Gießen and Kassel in the summer of 2023, which already led to the submission of a lawsuit by residents of the eastern city center in June 2023.

The investigation activity was initiated by criminal charges by private individuals, initially against Wright and later also against Mayor Frank-Tilo Becher (SPD), whose advertisement was not pursued further. Until the new investigation, it was unclear to what extent tax money was used for the project. According to Wright, no further orders were granted after the first court decision in July 2023.

illegality and unfaithfulness

The public prosecutor stated that a sufficient suspicion against Wright could initially be determined. An infidelity can not be demonstrated, but the investigators accuse the accusation that the mayor did not stop the traffic attempt despite a court ruling. The Gießen Administrative Court had already explained the attempt on July 10 as illegal, which led to the magistrate appealed to the Administrative Court in Kassel and continued to drive the project.

The continuation of the traffic attempt is said to have brought a property disadvantage for the city of Gießen due to increased dismantling costs. Up to this point, the costs for the project amounted to around 1.7 million euros. Mayor Becher announced that it would support the clarification of the matter while Wright cooperates, but has not yet publicly commented on the allegations.

The next steps

As part of the subsequent investigations, further witnesses are to be heard. In addition, the city of Gießen has already announced that the dismantling of the traffic project should be completed by spring 2024. This measure follows the growing criticism of the traffic attempt, which is considered controversial and has already led to protests and a petition by supporters.

The situation around the traffic attempt and the investigation against Mayor Wright raise questions about the responsibility in the city administration. In view of the ongoing controversy, it will be crucial for those responsible to communicate transparently and to restore the trust of the citizens. Further developments are to be expected because the investigation by the public prosecutor's office continues.
