This meeting followed the funeral fair for Pope Francis in St. Peter's Basilica and underlines the continued diplomatic efforts of the Vatican to settle the Ukraine War. Trump, who previously stood in a tense relationship with Selenskyj, announced "immediately impending" conversations on a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia on his Truth Social platform. Pope Leo XIV offered the church state as a possible negotiating location, which was confirmed by the Cardinal State Secretary Pietro Parolin. It remains unclear in which format the conversations will take place and whether the Pope will personally appear as an intermediary.

The Situation is particularly complex because President Vladimir Putin shows no interest in talks in the Vatican, as this could endanger the Russian Orthodox Church. Nevertheless, Selenskyj will be willing to give the Pope an opportunity as an intermediary. These diplomatic efforts continue the initiatives of Francis, who has already contacted the Moscow Patriarch to promote a peaceful solution. The Vatican is considered impartial and maintains diplomatic relationships with 184 countries, which has played an important role in international conflicts in the past.
