Driving license deprivation in the EU: a nightmare for traffic offenders!

In a dramatic step to improve traffic safety within the European Union, the Transport Minister of the EU decided to have a uniform license withdrawal for members who have massively violated traffic rules. Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing summed up the central message: "If someone has lost the driver's license in a Member State of the European Union because he has massively violated road traffic regulations, then he or she should not be allowed to drive everywhere". This new regulation could soon come into force, such as Berlin-Live reported.

The EU countries voted in Brussels for the project, which serves to increase traffic safety and to abolish the relative impunity for traffic terrowdies. The driver's license withdrawal is to be applied to severe traffic offenses such as alcohol or drug rides and lawns. However, there are exceptions to offenses that would not lead to a loss of driving license in the exhibiting Member State. The Deutsche Handwerks Zeitung supplemented that a driving ban can be issued in these cases without the driving license being withdrawn.

Details on the new regulation

A significant advantage of this new regulation is that there is no need to re -apply for the driver's license in the country of the offense. Instead, it is up to the country in which the driver's license was originally issued to take the corresponding measures. This cooperation is intended to help increase security on the streets where there were more than 20,000 traffic fatalities in the EU last year.

The outstanding details still have to be negotiated with the European Parliament before the new guidelines can be legally implemented. It can be expected that these processes will take some time before the goal of reducing the road fatalities by 50 percent by 2030 can be achieved.
