Mother critically injured while waiting for towing service!
A 37-year-old mother was critically injured in a tragic traffic accident last Sunday that occurred in the Fulda district. As thueringen.de reports, the woman initially stopped in an adjacent green area after she left the road in a sharp right-hand bend.
While she was waiting for the towing service, a 21-year-old driver drove his vehicle off the road and crashed into the mother's car in the same place. Tragically, the woman was standing next to her car at the time of the accident and was trapped underneath it. Luckily, her nine-year-old daughter, who was also in the car, only suffered minor injuries. The driver of the other car was also slightly injured. Rescue workers were able to take the mother to hospital after immediate resuscitation.
Accident statistics and road safety in Germany
However, this incident only sends ripples through the local community. At a higher level, statistics on traffic accidents in Germany show a worrying picture. According to destatis.de, around 2.5 million road traffic accidents were counted in 2024. This number shows a decrease compared to the previous year, while at the same time the number of accidents resulting in property damage increased. But the number of personal injury accidents remained at worrying levels, reminiscent of 1955 levels.
A particularly important goal pursued by the EU transport ministers is the so-called “Vision Zero” – the hope of not having a single traffic fatality by 2050. In 2024, 2,770 traffic deaths were counted in Germany, a number that is historically low but still corresponds to 33 deaths per million inhabitants. This number is below the EU average.
Causes of traffic accidents
The causes of the numerous accidents are often the same: insufficient distance, inadequate speed and driving under the influence of alcohol. In 2024, approximately 40 percent of alcohol-related accidents resulted in personal injury, resulting in 198 deaths and 17,776 injuries. The increasing use of e-bikes and e-scooters also poses new challenges for road safety. According to statista.com, 26,057 e-bike riders were involved in accidents in the same year, which shows that cyclists do not participate in road traffic without risk.
Road safety begins at your own doorstep. To make roads safer, a rethink and better transport infrastructure are necessary. Traffic education and government measures play an important role in preventing accidents. At the same time, the awareness of road users remains a key challenge.
These incidents and statistics should remind us all to be more careful on the roads and to take responsibility. Whether behind the wheel or as a pedestrian – everyone contributes to the safety of our roads.
