Renovation of the drinking water fountain in Schlitz: New chlorine notes!
There are two weeks of renovation work on the drinking water fountain in Schlitz-Hemmen - from today until July 14, 2025, citizens will be offered a temporary supply of water. In order to ensure a perfect drinking water supply for Schlitz-Hemmen, Fulda-Lüdermünd and Großenlüder-Lütterz, the Hemmen elevated tank is temporarily supplied via tankers from the Schlitz-Hartershausen water network, such as the Fulda newspaper reported.
An important detail: The water is chlorinated on the orders of the Vogelsberg district health department to ensure that the quality meets the requirements and is harmless to health. The chlorine concentration is determined in accordance with the guidelines of the Drinking Water Ordinance, which regulates the protection of drinking water quality. However, there is no boiling requirement. Sensitive people are advised not to use the chlorinated water for drinking or preparing food. Additionally, chlorinated water is not suitable for aquariums.
Legal situation and requirements
Drinking water quality is regulated by the Infection Protection Act (IfSG), which also assigns responsibility for monitoring water extraction and water supply systems to the health authorities. An analysis is carried out at least every two years to ensure that the water quality is harmless to health, as explained in the Federal Environment Agency is to be read. Regular checks and compliance with technical standards are essential to ensure water quality.
The current Drinking Water Ordinance, which came into force on June 24, 2023, aims to ensure a high level of drinking water quality and promote health protection. It implements the content of the EU Drinking Water Directive of 2020 and includes not only monitoring, but also preventive measures from the water extraction area to the end users. A risk-based approach assesses hygiene comprehensively rather than just focusing on the end product. Here you notice that Federal Ministry of Health states that the regulation also includes stricter requirements in the area of chemicals and microbes in order to protect the population as best as possible.
