Asylum numbers are collapsing: Hesse is drastically increasing deportations!
The situation in the Hessian initial reception center in Giessen is currently showing alarming trends. Compared to previous years, the facility has recorded a decrease of around 25% in normal procedures, without taking refugees from Ukraine into account. Loud Borken newspaper A total of 7,631 people were registered in Giessen in the first half of 2023, while there were only 4,141 asylum seekers in the first six months of 2025. This corresponds to a decrease of around 40%.
The largest group of arrivals in the first half of 2023 was the Ukrainian population, followed by people from Afghanistan, Turkey and Syria. This development suggests that the new measures to curb migration, which are being implemented at both the state and federal levels, are having an impact. Interior Minister Roman Poseck emphasizes that Hesse is playing a leading role in deportations and that the necessity of deportations is seen as a given despite human hardship. In the first six months of 2025, 1,017 people were deported from Hesse, an increase of 30% compared to the previous year, when 795 people were affected, reported daily news.
More deportations and less tolerance
A total of 1,661 deportations were carried out throughout 2024, which is around 20% more than in the previous year. The policy to combat illegal migration is clear and consistent. The Hessian internal administration has set up modern deportation detention facilities in Darmstadt-Eberstadt in order to maintain the legal framework and send a clear signal.
In this strict course, the number of tolerated stays does not remain unaffected. By the end of May 2025, there were 118 tolerations due to existing training relationships - a slight increase compared to 108 in the previous year. Despite all efforts to maintain the legal order, Poseck emphasizes that humanitarian aspects are taken into account in each individual case.
The occupancy rate of the initial reception center in Giessen was 52% on July 18, 2025 with around 6,200 residents. The facility has a total of almost 12,000 places, including an emergency shelter in Alsfeld for refugees from Ukraine. It remains to be seen how the reception of asylum seekers will continue. It seems clear that the new measures are being intensively supported by both the federal and state governments in order to regulate migration and stabilize the situation at the borders.
