Discover the secrets of breathing: Children's University in Gießen on May 20!

On May 20, 2025, an exciting event for children between the ages of 8 and 12 takes place at the Justus Liebig University in Gießen: the Justus' children's university. The speaker Prof. Dr. Natascha Sommer, a member of the Cardio Pulmonary Institute (CPI) Excellence Cluster, will talk about the fascinating topics of breathing and lung function in the auditorium of the main building of the university. The event begins at 4.15 p.m. and lasts until 5 p.m. Admission is free of charge, registration via the website www.uni-giessen.de/kinderuni is recommended, but is also possible on site.

The children's university offers the young participants the opportunity to discover in an entertaining and educational way how breathing works. Prof. Sommer will explain how oxygen -rich air gets into the lungs through the nose. An important aspect of the event will be the oxygen transmission to the blood and the exhalation of low -oxygen air. In addition, the structure of the lungs and the airway is explained, and there is interesting information about the function of pollutant filters in the lungs that make pollutants.

I understand hidden mechanisms of breathing

Special topics will also be the causes of side stitches, cough and blue lips. These aspects help develop a better understanding of your own body and to understand the importance of a healthy lung.

The nose plays a central role as an externally visible breathing body. The nostrils lead to the nasal cavity, which is separated into two sections through the nasal septum. The main function of the nasal cavity is the heating and moistening of the inhaled air, while the well -blooded and moist nasal mucosa filters dirt from the air. Fine hairs transport the mucus together with the particles to the outside, which supports the self -cleaning mechanism of the nose. These mechanisms are dealt with in detail in the children's university in order to bring the importance of the nose closer to the nose for breathing.

For all interested parties, the event not only offers the opportunity to learn the basics of breathing, but also the registration for the next children's university, which will take place on July 1, 2025. This is about nutrition, especially colorful food, with the speakers Prof. Dr. med. Jan de Laffolie and Evdokia Alexanidou.
