Lich's cyclists celebrate record: 36,670 kilometers and many awards!
The city of Lich recently honored the winners of the “City Cycling” competition, once again showing how important cycling is in the region. In total, the participants covered an impressive 36,670 kilometers from May 25 to June 14, 2025 and were able to save around 6 tons of CO2. This is Lich's sixth participation in this initiative, which promotes cycling, reduces emissions and improves quality of life. Mayor Dr. Julien Neubert and climate protection manager Franziska Weisel were present at the award ceremony and presented the winners with their prizes.
First place in the competition went to the “Friends and Helpers” team, which covered an incredible 6,971 kilometers in 251 trips. This achievement shows the high value of cycling in the community. With 18 cyclists, second place, VfL Muschenheim, reached 5,735 kilometers, while third place was taken by the “Licher Bierradlern” with 4,697 kilometers. The participation in the school cycling category is also impressive: Here the Dietrich Bohnhoeffer School won first place with 1,296 kilometers.
Awards for the most active cyclists
Christiane Bönisch-Rehkopf secured the title of most active cyclist with an impressive 612.7 kilometers. In the men's race, Michael Eberhard from the “BSC Lich” team was unbeatable with 1,286.5 kilometers. Livia Goll from the “Christengemeinde” team had the most rides among the women (53), while Denny Dannewitz from the “BSC Lich” team led the men with 47 rides. The winners were able to enjoy gifts from local sponsors, which further strengthened the community.
In order to further promote cycling in Lich, Mayor Neubert announced improvements during the ceremony. Among other things, bicycle garages are to be built at the train station to offer cyclists more comfort. These measures are no coincidence; The positive feedback on the cycle paths in Lich speaks volumes.
A competition that goes beyond Lit
The “City Cycling” competition, which has been organized by Climate Alliance since 2008, motivates people around the world to cycle everyday routes and discover the benefits of cycling. Registrations for the event often reach several hundred municipalities, which then compete for the best places. The competition takes place annually between May 1st and September 30th and lasts 21 consecutive days. All participants have the opportunity to collect as many kilometers as possible professionally and privately in order to support their community and advocate for more cycling friendliness reports the Federal Environment Agency.
The function of the RADar! platform is also particularly interesting, as it allows citizens to report problems such as potholes and thus actively contribute to improving the cycling infrastructure. Every year the competition attracts around 300,000 participants from around 900 municipalities, who cover an impressive total distance of around 60 million kilometers says the city cycling website.
Overall, the example from Lich shows how creative initiatives can advance cycling in communities. Every kilometer cycled not only protects the climate, but also improves the quality of life in everyday life for citizens. A step in the right direction that should be continued in the future.
