Protest against the AfD youth: diversity instead of fascism in Giessen!

An important protest is imminent: On November 29th and 30th, the AfD is planning to found a new youth organization in Giessen. This should possibly be called “Young Patriots” or “Patriotic Youth”. The Resistance group, a nationwide anti-fascist action alliance, has already announced that it will mobilize against this project. gew-hamburg.de reports that GEW Hamburg supports the actions of Widerstellen to stop the normalization of the AfD and prevent the founding of its youth organization.

What is on offer? Resist is planning a celebration of diversity and solidarity to send a strong message against fascism. Participants in the alliance, including anti-fascists, queer and anti-racist groups as well as trade unionists and young people, are campaigning for a clear signal: “No room for fascism – not today, not tomorrow”.

The role of political education

The protest is not only an expression of resistance against a specific political movement, but also a sign of the importance of political education among young people. The Federal Government's 16th Children and Youth Report, published in autumn 2020, addresses the importance of political self-education in various areas. This ranges from schools to youth centers to social movements. It is emphasized that such initiatives can make a decisive contribution to a democratic culture, as is also described in the article by bpb.de.

In these self-organized educational processes, young people can not only learn what democracy means, but also actively shape it. This message is particularly relevant at a time when extremist tendencies are trying to find a place in the minds of young people.

The resistance is growing

Preparations for the journey to Giessen are already underway and members of the alliance are determined to defend themselves against the steps planned by the AfD. The action is a response to the increasing threat from right-wing extremist ideologies and the effort to raise a new generation of violent fascists. Resist sees itself as having a responsibility to actively counteract this trend.

With a broad network and a clear strategy, the action alliance makes it clear that political processes must under no circumstances be left to the extremists. Dealing with such topics and engaging young people are essential to promote democratic, open coexistence.

Finally, it should be noted that the coming months will be crucial and it is up to all of us to get involved and show that diversity and solidarity strengthen our society.
