Heat wave hits Hesse: hottest June weekend ever!

The temperatures are rising and the anticipation of summer is palpable! On Friday, June 20, 2025, the German Weather Service (DWD) is forecasting an exciting weather weekend for Hesse. With midsummer temperatures over 30 degrees, especially in the picturesque Rhine-Main area, June is likely to be one of the hottest since weather records began in 1881. Meteorologist Dominik Jung even describes the start of summer as a “bang bang”. But what kind of weather can we really expect?

On Friday the temperatures reach pleasing values between 24 and 29 degrees. At night, people in big cities can look forward to mild lows of 10 to 12 degrees. For Saturday, June 21st, up to 17 hours of sunshine and highs of more than 31 degrees are predicted; here the thermometer ticks up to 32 degrees in the Rhine-Main area. With so much sun, there is a light to moderate wind from the southeast, which makes the heat more bearable.

Changeable weekend with sweets and storms

However, the beautiful weather has a “BUT”: On Sunday night the sky will remain clear or slightly cloudy, but meteorologists are expecting changes on Sunday. Heavy rain and thunderstorms cannot be ruled out, and the Hessian State Office for Nature Conservation, Environment and Geology (HLNUG) is already warning of possible floods. On Sunday itself it will be variable to very cloudy with occasional showers and thunderstorms. Temperatures drop to pleasant levels between 15 and 19 degrees after a hot Saturday.

For all those who can't tolerate the heat very well, here's a little tip: The UV index will rise to values of 7 to 9 in the coming days, which corresponds to dangerous sun rays. A sun hat and sunscreen are not bad companions.

A look at the climate figures

One reason for the unusually high temperatures could be climate change. Studies show that the average temperature in Germany has risen by around 1.7 degrees Celsius since 1881. This not only leads to an increase in heat waves, but also to an increase in extreme weather events such as heavy rain and thunderstorms. According to current forecasts, dangerous hot days in temperate latitudes are expected to double by 2050, further increasing the challenges for the future weather pattern. These connections between climate change and extreme weather events are examined in so-called attribution research. It shows that around 70% of the extreme weather events analyzed have become more likely or more intense due to climate change.

The weekend will be exciting: from summer temperatures to the possibility of storms – the weather has a lot to offer. No matter what the weather turns out to be, whether you'll be able to relax outside or have to prepare for rain remains to be seen. One thing is certain: nature remains unpredictable and deserves our respect!

For further information on the weather situation and current warnings, I recommend keeping an eye on the reports from the DWD and HLNUG. fr.de reported and fnp.de supplements the forecasts to raise awareness of possible storms.
