Alsfeld's chess team suffers bitter setback against Kassel II

The Alsfeld chess club is facing bitter disappointment after the most recent game in the North Regional League. The Oberhessische Zeitung reports that the 1st team lost against Caissa Kassel 2 with a score of 2.5:5.5. After a strategically tense competition, the team is now struggling with the missed opportunity to win.

The chess game began with high hopes, but these were quickly dampened. Dr. Jens Schweisgut on board 7 had to give up a central pawn in the opening, which led to a quick defeat. If you initially thought the game was going well, Bernd Miemelt was able to equalize the game on board 8 with a successful sacrificial attack on the opposing king. However, things can happen so quickly: Frank Solf on board 3 offered a draw, which was accepted by the opponent. Wrong tactical decisions had a profound impact on the rest of the game.

Critical moments and loss of opportunities

Neither Lothar Zilch on board 4 nor Marco Stein on board 1 were able to keep their positions stable. Zilch lost his game after his opponent opened the position and used a knight fork, which cost him a bishop. Stein, on the other hand, had to give up in a heavy piece endgame after his opponent found a decisive move in a time crunch. Helmut Wiegand on board 5 lost his game due to a time violation, while Nils Kneußel on board 6 rejected a draw bid and then fell into a loss.

Expectations are high in the next round because the competition in the Chess round 2025/2026 will provide the opportunity to rehabilitate. The first round is planned for December 10, 2025, in which the team will meet new challengers. The 2nd round took place on October 26, 2025 and here too, SK Schwandorf was unable to maintain their performance at the desired level, which immediately raises the question: What is necessary to perform more successfully in the coming game?

One thing is certain: Alsfeld must rethink their strategy and improve their concentration in order to perform better in the next challenges. The game of chess is sometimes a hard road, and after losing all hope, they must find new hope. At least they saw some bright spots, such as the victories of Miemelt and Tobias Stein, which should provide motivation for the fights to come.
