Passenger boom in northern Hesse: public transport use is increasing rapidly!

In recent years, public transport in Germany has developed significantly, and this also applies to the region between Hann. Münden and Kassel. The boom in bus and train transport is obvious, and the Deutschland Ticket, which was introduced in May 2023, plays a central role in this. Loud HNA The number of passengers on the regional train lines RE2, RE9 and RB83 increased by an impressive 33 percent in 2024 compared to 2022. Almost 1.6 million travelers used these connections, giving the region a strong boost.

The greatest demand was on the RB83 line, which had 1.1 million passengers - almost 300,000 more than two years earlier. The mood in scheduled bus transport is also good: around 291,000 passengers were transported in Hann in 2024. Münden counted, an increase of 16 percent since 2022. Excepted from these numbers, however, was bus route 30, which was unable to travel into the city for several months. If this line had worked, the increase in the other lines would have been 31 percent.

The balance sheet of the Germany ticket

On May 1, 2024, the Deutschland Ticket will be one year old, and the results are promising: In the NVV area, which is also Hann. Münden, over 56,600 subscriptions had been taken out by April 1, 2024, with two thirds of the subscribers being new customers. This shows that the initiative to make public transport more attractive is taking effect. Not only are these developments a delight for passengers, but they also ease traffic congestion, which is welcome news for many city residents. The NPT highlights that many passengers have switched to cheaper tickets such as the student ticket or senior ticket, which remain popular options.

Easier mobility and challenges

Traveling by bus and train remains very popular, the numbers speak for themselves. Over 100,000 passengers with NVV subscriptions now travel regularly. Despite these positive numbers reported ZDF that the increased number of passengers also brings with it challenges. Many regional trains have already had to leave passengers behind. It quickly becomes clear that good service and a wide range of connections are simply essential in order to meet demand in the long term.

The development of local transport not only offers convenience for commuters and the city population, but also ensures that local public transport in the region is constantly optimized. The NVV has already celebrated some successes with the “Every Village – Every Hour” service offensive, but expanding public transport services must continue to be a priority. Financing must be secured in the long term by the federal and state governments so that this boom does not stall.
