Kassel is planning: 22 new trams from 2027 – a million-dollar project!

Exciting things are happening in the area of public transport in Kassel! The Kassel Transport Company (KVG) has big plans: from 2027, 22 new trams will roll through the city. A proud investment volume of around 88 million euros makes this project the largest vehicle investment in the history of the KVG.

The new trams will not only be fully air-conditioned and quiet, but will also be barrier-free and surprisingly spacious to accommodate families with strollers and people with walkers. The manufacturer of the trams Škoda Group from the Czech Republic, will work with the support of the Kassel company Hübner in the production of transition systems between the wagons. This cooperation is described by Hübner managing director Kai Mentel as a “must win” and “a matter of the heart”.

Regional value creation and accessibility

Pleasing for the region: Hübner is supplying a total of 44 transition systems, consisting of external corrugated bellows, internal folding bellows and turntable, as well as 88 hand folding ramps. These ramps make a significant contribution to accessibility, a central element of the 2030 public transport strategy, which aims to make all mobility offerings accessible to everyone. The concept takes into account not only the vehicles, but also stops and stations, which need to be expanded accordingly so that everyone can travel without problems, like that Future public transport network emphasized.

Economic considerations also play a role. The KVG has made it clear that the most economical offer is decisive in tenders, even if regional value creation is to be promoted. While Hübner benefits from this project, other regional companies such as Bode and Alstorm are left empty-handed.

Efficiency and securing the future

The challenge remains to remain efficient even in an increasingly competitive market. Hübner announced that he would cut around 10% of the 1,100 jobs in Kassel in order to be competitive. A mixed message that raises concerns for many employees, but also points to the need to adapt to the changes in the industry.

The first new trams are probably expected in Kassel in mid-2026, and once approved, they will also be used in regular scheduled services from 2027, including on routes to Baunatal, Vellmar and through the Lossetal. Local public transport in Kassel could actually take a big leap forward, not only for customers, but also for the regional economy.
