REWE Pay starts: New payment system revolutionizes your shopping!
Rewe is making a big leap into the digital world! From July 1, 2025, the retailer will introduce a new payment system called “Rewe Pay”. How fr.de reports, the system allows customers to pay easily and conveniently at the checkout using their smartphone. The special thing about it: The amount due is debited directly from the checking account by direct debit, which promises a smooth process. This requires a one-time linking of the checking account with the Rewe app.
“Rewe Pay” replaces the previous, somewhat cumbersome Payback payment system, which had been in use since 2017. The company hopes that the new solution will make the payment process faster and easier, as no additional app will have to be opened. The payment methods have also been optimized – mydealz.de highlights that the system is based on direct debit and does not support Apple Pay or credit cards. Users must also ensure that their smartphone is secured with an active locking mechanism to prevent misuse.
A look at the security precautions
For every payment, Rewe requires confirmation, which is done either through biometric recognition or a password. These measures are intended to ensure the protection of user data and increase security when paying. Rewe has also announced that the use of “Rewe Pay” will initially only be possible with the smartphone from which the function was activated.
In addition, “Rewe Pay” will be launched in selected markets, and an expansion to a nationwide level is still in the stars. Rewe is thus following the trend that other retailers such as Lidl and Kaufland have already shown. Like that EHI Retail Institute emphasizes, the use of mobile payment systems in retail is constantly increasing, and Rewe is following suit with its digital solution in order to remain competitive.
The future of payments
In addition, Rewe will also test new payment options in the future, including the Pick&Go app for cashier-free shopping and modern self-checkout terminals. The decision to end Payback and introduce the new “Rewe Bonus” program, which relies on euro credits instead of points, shows that the retailer is ready to breathe new life into the shopping experience.
A look at the payments landscape shows that cash payments in retail are increasing to 13.57 billion euros, highlighting the need for alternative payment methods. The willingness of retailers to invest in modern payment infrastructure is increasing, and “Rewe Pay” could play a decisive role in this development.
The big question remains how well the new system will be received by customers. But one thing is certain: the future of payment is digital and Rewe is taking the step to continue to be successful in the rapidly growing market.
