Athletics mourns Bernd Kalb – A life for sport!

Athletics in Germany has suffered a bitter loss: Bernd Kalb has died at the age of 69. The long-time referee was active in the ASC Breidenbach club and worked for the DLV for over 50 years. He went down in the history of German sport as the senior judge in the pole vault. His commitment was recognized with the HLV and DLV badge of honor in gold, which earned him the recognition of his colleagues and the entire sports community. With Kalb, the ASC Breidenbach and the athletics district are not only losing a competent referee, but also a committed member of the board and a valuable member of the coaching staff.

For many, Bernd Kalb remains a role model whose passion for athletics was tireless. Whether during competitions or training, his bright smile and his specialist knowledge were always appreciated. Such personalities shape sports clubs and their communities - and Kalb was a rock in the surf with his positive nature. His contributions to the sport will be remembered.

Latest news from the referee community

A lot is also happening in the world of referees. As the homepage of the Berlin athletics judges reports, there are important topics on the agenda for the next meeting on Wednesday, June 18, 2025. The community is active and two clubs are currently looking for committed referees. In addition to the personal exchange at these meetings, there are also digital formats that have become more important during the corona pandemic. However, there are currently no basic courses planned for the training of new referees.

The demand for referees and their training remains unbroken, as an overview of online courses initiated by the pandemic shows. Last year, over 200 training courses were held and over 100 new judges were trained. Digital training will continue to be firmly anchored in refereeing in the future. For example, several F courses and basic training courses will be advertised online in the near future, which are intended to provide the judges with valuable knowledge.

The world of athletics is lively and varied, and we can only hope that Bernd Kalb's legacy motivates further generations of athletes and referees. His death is not only a loss for ASC Breidenbach, but for the entire athletics community.
