Protests in Oldenburg: Memory of fallen Lorenz A. inflamed debate
On May 11, 2025, around 250 people took to commemorate Lorenz A. in Kassel, who was shot by the police on his 22nd birthday. The tragedy occurred in Oldenburg (Lower Saxony), where Lorenz had attacked an official with irritant gas, which led to the deadly police operation. The organizers of the demonstration, the "Justice for Lorenz" initiative, called for transparency and an independent examination of the incident.
The friend of Lorenz, Ihsan, described him as a brother and part of his family. "It scares us what happened," said Suraj Mailitafi from the initiative and warned justice. During the demonstration, participants referred to the massive allegations against the Oldenburg police, which is particularly criticized due to the possible racist background of the incident. Lower Saxony Interior Minister Daniela Behrens spoke of "serious questions" and called for an enforcement clarification of the circumstances.
criticism of police violence and racism
Suraj Mailitafi also questioned why a young black like Lorenz A. could get into such a situation. The shots on him, which were apparently placed in his back, have re -lived in the discussion about racism within the police. Beatrix el-fifahi, one of the demonstrators, expressed concerns about the circumstances of his death and the persecution by the officials.
The incident is part of a variety of cases in Germany in which racist police violence is discussed. As Fru.de are affected, many black people and people of color are affected by police power. Again and again racist ideologies seem to manifest themselves in the police, which leads internationally to protests against police violence and racism.
protests against right -wing extremism
On the same day, large demonstrations also took place against the AfD, in which more than 1000 people took part. Organized by networks such as "Together against Right" and "Defend human dignity-AfD ban now", the participants demanded that the federal government initiate a procedure for the prohibition declaration of the AfD. The protesters see the party a danger to the democratic values of Germany and are committed to a clear social demarcation against right -wing extremism.
fire damage in Erlensee and Bad Orb
In parallel to the demonstrations, several fires occurred in Hesse, which also attracted attention. In Erlensee, a former post office caught fire, for which the fire brigade saved two people. The cause of the fire was suspected in the accommodation accumulation, and luckily there were no injuries. The building is often used by homeless and had already burned in the past.in Bad Orb, on the other hand, broke out a fire in a residential building that caused damage of at least 200,000 euros. The investigation into the cause of the fire, which probably originated on the terrace, is running. All residents were able to leave the building unharmed, but the house is now uninhabitable, and a neighboring house was also damaged.
These incidents reflect the deep social challenges and conflicts that currently shape Germany, while the discussion about racism and police violence continues to escalate.
