Members in Hesse: Who grows, who shrinks from choice?

In the run -up to the Bundestag election in 2024, the membership numbers of Hessian parties show remarkable developments. According to a current survey by the German Press Agency (dpa), the SPD has 40,736 members, as of December 1, 2024, still most members in Hesse, even if this means a decline in 1,153 members compared to the beginning of the year. This reports fr.de .

The CDU can also record a positive member balance. With 32,953 members on November 30, 2024, the party grew by 120 members. The Greens have also gained importance since the traffic light government in Berlin and were able to win over 1,000 new members. Their entirety now amounts to 11,576 members, an increase of 9,686 at the beginning of the year.

member development of the FDP and AfD

The FDP, on the other hand, had to accept a decline in its number of members. The figures dropped from 7,099 members from December 31, 2023 to 6,715 a year and a half later. Nevertheless, 275 people have made an application for membership since the end of the traffic light government, which indicates a certain interest. In contrast, the AfD shows a gratifying member development. With 3,542 members, as of December 31, 2024, the party has grown by over 700 members and represents the fifth largest state association of the Federal Party.

The development of the left is particularly remarkable. It records a record value with 3,652 members (as of January 1, 2025). According to a party spokesman, there were more than 900 admissions last year, which is a net growth of over 600 members. The positive development is significantly influenced by Donald Trump's election victory and the end of the traffic light government. Nevertheless, after the loss of its seat in the state parliament in Hesse, the party faces challenges, especially with regard to the upcoming elections, where it is only three percent nationwide.

effects of the political landscape

The Hessian left had not been represented in the state parliament since 2023. Interestingly, at the beginning of 2023, the Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW), a new competitor party from former left-wing members, formed itself, which immediately moved into several state parliament. These developments show the inconsistency in the membership development of the Hessian parties, which is strongly influenced by the political climate and the current social currents, such as Wnoz.de reported.
