Phantoms secure narrow victory against Fighting Farmers – Krauss shines!
On June 15, 2025, an exciting duel in the GFL2 was on the agenda in the Mons Tabor Stadium when the Wiesbaden Phantoms took on the Montabaur Fighting Farmers. The game quickly developed into an exciting thriller in which the Phantoms ultimately had the upper hand 24:17. As Wiesbaden aktuell reports, the game started nervously, as both teams were marked by numerous penalties and errors.
The Phantoms initially got off to a rocky start when Benji Barnes made an appealing return, but shortly afterwards had to concede a delay of game penalty. It was Lennart Turturica who was able to secure the first first down for the Phantoms with a pass to Felix Schulz. But a bad snap cost the team 20 yards, and Turturica had an interception that was caught by Alexandru Popa.
An exciting exchange of blows
The Farmers, who were runners-up in their league last year and are aiming for relegation in 2025, took a 6-0 lead thanks to a touchdown from Chris Hobson and a PAT from Jamel Hedhli. But the Phantoms weren't impressed. They promptly responded with a touchdown from Justin Schmitt, followed by a successful PAT from Leon Amberg, making it 7-7.
The Phantoms took control in the first half and scored another touchdown through Schulz. With another PAT from Amberg, they went into halftime with a 14:7 lead. The Phantoms stayed in control in the third quarter and increased the score to 21:7 with a touchdown from Jerry Weishaupt, which was again supported by Amberg with a PAT. A severe storm interrupting the game for 30 minutes did not disrupt the flow of the game, and Amberg even brought the game to 24:14 with a 38-yard field goal.
Back and forth in the final sprint
Despite the dominance and high leadership, the Farmers didn't let up. Emil Meissner led a comeback and scored a touchdown, while Hedhli converted the PAT, narrowing the deficit to 24-14. At least now the excitement was back in the game when the Farmers scored a field goal and were only behind 17:24.
The dramatic conclusion came when the Farmers managed an onside kick and had the chance to equalize. However, Maximilian Krauss showed nerves of steel, stopped Meissner in the last attempt and secured the Phantoms a narrow victory. The Farmers had previously had an outstanding 2024 season, in which they were able to collect many successes under the new head coach Tino von Eckardt.
With this victory, the Phantoms have underlined their claim. However, they don't have time to rest, because on June 21st they will face the Regensburg Phoenix, another test in the current season that they should not underestimate, as GFL Info emphasizes.
