Wiesbaden opens colorful place for children's rights on June 24th!
On Tuesday, June 24th, there will be a celebration at Wachsackerstrasse 5, in the Sauerland district. At 4 p.m., head of the social affairs department, Dr. Patricia Becher is opening a new children's rights site, which is part of the project “Making children's rights visible in Wiesbaden”. The aim of this project is to raise awareness of the rights of children living in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child are anchored, to sharpen them and to make them more present in public space wiesbaden.de reported.
Dr. Becher particularly emphasizes how important it is that children are heard not only in laws but also in everyday life. As early as spring 2025, children from the “Die Zwerge” daycare center and young people from “KBS Trafohaus” redesigned the outdoor area of the employment initiative. The younger ones painted the fence in the colorful style of the famous artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, which underlines the children's right to play, leisure and relaxation. The older young people, on the other hand, decorated the long side of a container with motifs that represent central children's rights. The result is an impressive, colorful work of art that focuses on the important message of children's rights.
A call for creative minds
The project “Making children’s rights visible in Wiesbaden” has been running for several years and the city is still looking for creative minds. The Art on Site Fund 2024 invites artists from all areas to apply. With the hope of creating more public spaces where children's rights can be experienced, permanent locations are to be created in the Schelmengraben district center and in the Sauerland Park, among others. Temporary artistic interventions in the pedestrian zone are also planned, such as wiesbaden-leben.de reported.
Dr. Becher encourages artists to contribute their talents and get involved. An integral part of the project is the inclusion of children, young people or parents in the process in order to exploit the creativity and ideas of different age groups. Interested parties can apply until August 15th, and the selected projects will then be implemented in autumn 2024. If you have any questions, please contact the youth work department on the telephone number (0611) 313598 and the email address culturaleducation@wiesbaden.de.
The importance of children's rights
The initiative in Wiesbaden not only addresses the visibility of children's rights, but also promotes their understanding and application. In the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child Establishes key principles, including the protection of children from neglect and violence and the right to fair treatment in the event of legal disputes. Article 39, for example, calls for a child-friendly environment for the recovery of children who have been victims of abuse or conflict. This shows how important it is to make space for the needs of children in society.
The upcoming opening of the child-friendly place in Wiesbaden is not only a celebration of creativity, but also a commitment to the rights that all children are entitled to. The contribution that each and every individual can make is immeasurable - because, as Dr. Becher puts it aptly: Children deserve to be seen and heard.
