Karlsruhe at the top: Best local transport in Germany discovered!
Karlsruhe recently received the award for the best public transport in Germany. This result was determined by a comprehensive examination of the Tripz travel voucher portal, which compared the traffic connections in the 25 largest cities in Germany. The findings could be particularly interested in local transport users and travelers because they offer valuable insights into the transport infrastructure of the cities.
With the 49-euro ticket introduced since May 1, 2023, travelers are now able to drive around Germany at low cost. This ticket has made prices more transparent in local public transport and opens up many new travel options. But where should you go best? Karlsruhe, together with Hanover, has headed the public transport ranking, which makes the city attractive to residents and tourists.
evaluation criteria of the public transport ranking
The ranking is based on three central criteria: the variety of public transport in a city, the number of lines and the speed in relation to the area size. In Karlsruhe and Hanover, these strengths are particularly evident, which leads to their high scores of 61 points each and thus to the first place together.
- Number of public transport funds such as U- and S-Bahn, bus, tram or ferry
- total number of lines within a city
- speed in relation to the size of the city in square kilometers
Karlsruhe convinces with a fleet of around 250 bus and train lines that enable the passengers' effective transportation. For the north-south route you only need about 86 minutes on average, while crossing from west to the east only takes 82 minutes, each with just one change. In addition, the city is well connected to the surrounding area with the S-Bahn, including an hour's drive to Heidelberg.
But not only Karlsruhe has achieved pleasant results. Stuttgart takes fourth place with 54 points and also shows a promising traffic infrastructure. Within the state capital, passengers need about an hour to cross the north-south. The offer includes over 3,200 employees at the SSB, which ensure smooth operation.
Mannheim and the diverse possibilities
with 53 points, Mannheim achieved fifth place in the nationwide ranking. The city offers a network of 82 lines that brings both locals and tourists quickly and easily from A to B. A trip from the north to the south takes an average of 65 minutes, while from west to east only around 40 minutes pass.
The connection options are particularly practical because Mannheim can be reached in less than an hour and a half by public transport to Frankfurt am Main, where one of the largest airports in Europe is located. In addition, excursions to Saarbrücken are possible within two hours.
These remarkable results suggest that Baden-Württemberg is well positioned in the area of local public transport. Despite all the complaints about the train, it turns out that the big regional cities provide great offers for local transport. Whether for commuters, students or tourists - the cities present themselves conveniently without their own car.
