Loburg blooms: Karls makes the manor estate a tourism hotspot!
in the contemplative Loburg, a municipality in Jerichower Land with around 2,000 inhabitants, Gabriele Schmohl, 71 years old, took the initiative to bundle the activities on site. The volunteer mayor and CDU member has created an extensive list that includes the numerous cultural workers, sports clubs and volunteers in the community. This commitment shows how alive the village life is and what role volunteering plays in rural regions.
The formerly listed manor, which has been under the direction of the strawberry company "Karl" since April 2, 2018, is particularly remarkable. The initial concerns about the settlement have proven to be unfounded, and the manor has developed into a true magnet for tourism. According to the report of MDR last year counted over 200,000 visitors.tourist attractions and economic influence
"Karls", which now operates ten locations in Germany, also has big plans for an expansion to the USA and a new location in the Harz. Robert Dahl, the managing director of "Karls", has deep personal connections to Loburg after he acquired the Rittergut 2014 for 80,000 euros. The renovation of the historical building was carried out with a lot of effort and devotion and ultimately proved to be profitable. Today it is operated, offers a popular brunch at the weekend and has established a barby café.
In addition to the culinary offers, there are numerous leisure opportunities, including a Tobeland, a knight playground and a candy and burner work in the area. The Kullmann distillery, which produces strawberry liqueur for "Karls", has also expanded its tourist offers since its settlement. Efforts for further developments, such as the use of a deteriorated Catholic Church for Yoga retreats, underline the dynamics that the company develops in Loburg.
voluntary commitment and challenges
Volunteering plays a crucial role in the development of rural communities. Projects carried out on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) show how important this commitment is to strengthen rural regions. In a period from 2021 to 2024, 15 research institutions work on 11 projects to develop trends and political recommendations for the support of the volunteer. However, the challenges for this type of engagement should not be underestimated, including demographic change, young talent and increasing bureaucratic requirements.
The knowledge from these research projects could be important for municipalities such as Loburg to create the basis for future initiatives. Questions about mobility, the role of young people in volunteering and the framework conditions for clubs are in focus and could also be of interest to the tourist potential in Loburg.
The plans for the expansion of the parking spaces in Loburg are already in the works in order to be able to better manage the number of visitors. "Karls" currently employs 42 people in the region and thus provides a valuable economic contribution. While the Rittergut is planning further projects, including the restoration of a castle as an additional tourist goal, the development of Loburg remains an exciting example of the combination of tradition, volunteering and modern tourism.
