port city of Bandar Abbas

BANDAR ABBAS, capital of the province of Hormozgān, is a strategically important port at the access to Hormuz's street, the main exit for maritime activities in southern Iran. The city was founded in 1623 by Shah ʿAbbās I and has developed into an important trading center over the centuries. During the 17th century, she acted as the main port of Persia, but lost this status to the rival port of B refehr in the 18th century.

The local economy benefits from imports of industrial products as well as exports such as Kermān-carpets, petroleum products and agricultural products. Despite unfavorable port conditions, especially with regard to the water depth and protection, Bandar Abbas experienced an economic upswing during the Iran Irak War in the 1980s. In recent years, additional port facilities and shipyards have been built to improve the infrastructure.
