Winter school for children: German lessons with fun and success!

From February 10th to 14th, 2025, a special winter school takes place at the primary school at Margaretenplatz in German, which is organized by students from the University of Rostock. Under the direction of Professor Wenke Mückel, over 40 primary school children will take part in this initiative, which both promotes the children's knowledge of German and offers a varied holiday experience. 19 students from the primary school teaching office are involved in the program.

Winter school is divided into different groups: three groups of the 1st grade, two groups of the 2nd grade, three groups of the 3rd grade and one group of the 4. Class. The focus is on reading and spelling funding, and creative staging ideas are developed to motivate the children. The needs of children who learn German as a second language (DAZ).

integration and multilingual funding

Traditionally, the DAZ funding often took place separately from native language support. Winter school pursues the goal of creating a “multilingual classroom” in which children with German are integrated into groups with German children of the same age as a second language. This requires a differentiated topic preparation that is tailored to the respective performance level and the language skills of the children.

The importance of multilingual funding is underlined by studies that show that children and adolescents who learn German as a second language go through similar acquisition processes when acquiring the written language. However, differences should be observed to ensure effective funding. This approach supports the children in bringing their first language into the learning processes as an important resource, which improves the development of their linguistic self -concept and understanding of the second language. Teachers do not necessarily have to master the first language of the learners, but this can facilitate cooperation with the parents.

didactic methods and individual support

The basis of reading and spelling funding is based on profound diagnostics that enables precisely precise funding. Contents of this funding are based on the individual needs of the children. In parallel to reading spelling funding, vocabulary promotion should also take place, whereby well-known strategies such as the note of unexplained words play a central role. For the promotion of multilingual children, it is crucial to take their existing knowledge into account and to integrate this approach into the classroom.

With this initiative, the University of Rostock not only offers valuable support for primary school children, but also takes an important step towards integrating and promoting multilingualism in today's school education. The combination of creative teaching methods and a well thought -out structure promises not only to help the children with learning, but also to offer them an enriching holiday experience.
