Merz is looking for China's support for ceasefire in Ukraine!
Kiew, Ukraine - Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) advertised in a phone call with the Chinese President Xi Jinping for support for international efforts to introduce a ceasefire in the Russian attack war against Ukraine. This was the first conversation between Merz and XI since Merz ’took office about two and a half weeks ago. In a context in which China is seen as the most important ally of Russia, support from Beijing is of central importance for German and European efforts for peace in the region. Previous attempts to bring about a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine on the part of the United States and the Europeans have been unsuccessful.
In the conversation,Merz and XI emphasized their willingness to cooperate in partnership in order to cope with global challenges. The importance of economic relationships between Germany and China was also discussed. Merz emphasized the importance of a fair competition and the two heads of state agreed to continue their exchange in order to further develop German-Chinese cooperation. These diplomatic efforts are part of a larger plan that Merz refers to as the "greatest diplomatic initiative".
demand for ceasefire
In the context of this initiative, Merz and other European heads of state and government presented a demand for Russia, including Emmanuel Macron, Keir Strandmer and Donald Tusk. This aims at a 30-day unconditional ceasefire, which should be valid from the following Monday. If non -compliance, there are new extensive sanctions. The four heads of state and government traveled to Kiev by train to meet President Wolodymyr Selenskyj and to discuss the situation.criticism of peace plans
The reactions from Russia are split. Dmitri Medvedev, the vice -chief of the Russian National Security Council, expressed a pejorative manner of the peace plans of the European countries. As a prerequisite for a ceasefire, Russia calls for an end to the arms deliveries to Ukraine. Peskow also said concerns that Ukraine could use a ceasefire to continue their mobilization.
In this complex geopolitical situation, the diplomatic initiative of Merz is a crucial step to seek a peaceful solution in the Ukraine conflict, even if the challenges remain significant. The coming weeks will show whether a de -escalation can actually occur or whether the fronts remain hardened.
