Fore -ups in the Sauerland: construction work will start soon!
In the Sauerland, there will be considerable restrictions on rail traffic in the coming months. Deutsche Bahn has announced extensive construction work on important sections of the route between Hagen and Warburg, which are already starting on May 8 and should last until autumn 2025. The measures affect numerous train lines, including lines RE 17, RE 57 and RB 54, which are replaced by buses on the affected sections of the route. Information on failures and alternatives are available on the website www.zuginfo.nrw.
In particular affected phases of the construction work, the following period includes: From 8 to May 19, the tracks and switches are renewed in the Arnsberg area and Neheim-Hüsten area. In the future, an investment of over 14 million euros is planned in the modernization of tracks and the course in the Sauerland in order to improve the infrastructure sustainably. In various sections, the tracks and switches are replaced and thresholds and gravel are renewed.
construction work at a glance
The construction work is divided into several phases:
- 8. Until May 19: Renewal of five switches and almost 800 meters track in Neheim-Hüsten and four soft and about one kilometer track in Arnsberg. In addition, over 3,000 thresholds and almost 6,000 tons of gravel are replaced.
- 21. May to June 16: work between Schwerte and Fröndenberg: Renewal of nine soft and over 1.6 kilometers track. Over 2,400 thresholds and almost 5,800 tons of gravel are replaced.

In the last phase there will be further changes in train traffic. The RE 17 will temporarily shift its starting and target stations to Brilon City, while the RE 57 has to deal with bus replacement traffic between Brilon Wald and Bestwig. These replacement measures are necessary to adapt the infrastructure to the increased requirements.
future challenges and opportunities
From August 2025, further construction work in Hagen and between Warburg, Scherfede, Arnsberg and Bestwig are also planned. In addition, a large closure in Bochum is expected in autumn 2025. The scope of the construction work and its effects show that 2025 is considered a year of change for rail traffic in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Although the challenges are great, there is hope for a more reliable rail network. The planned modernization is intended to cover the increasing need for mobility in North Rhine-Westphalia. Travelers are asked to regularly inform themselves in timetable apps and to look at alternative means of transport at an early stage in order to better manage the effects of the construction work. Ideas such as switching to the bike or temporary home office are advised as alternative strategies.
Deutsche Bahn is optimistic that the extensive investments and improvements will have a long -term positive effects on the region's mobility. Dewezet reports that the quality of life of commuters and travelers in the oxyland should increase sustainably. Ruhr24 adds and emphasizes the meaning of regular updates, while Nahaverkehr NRW indicates the need to set the course for a modern infrastructure.
