New exhibition 100 Years of Remscheid District Court: View of history!
On May 9, 2025, the district court of Remscheid celebrates its 100th anniversary. On the occasion of this anniversary, a comprehensive exhibition is opened that brings the history of the court alive. Dr. Thomas Künzel, director of the district court, carried out archive research specifically in order to compile outstanding events and bizarre stories from the court history. The exhibition will include 15 roll-ups that provide photos and information, including a remarkable picture of the court building with a tram from 1925.
The roots of the district court go back to the 1920s when Remscheid experienced significant economic recovery after the crises of the First World War. During this time, the tool industry was shaped by immense growth, which made it possible for the city to export its products - such as pliers, hammers and screwdrivers - worldwide. However, the increasing trading activities also led to conflicts, which ultimately demanded a new district court, since the previous locations in Schützenstraße and Scharffstraße no longer met the requirements. In 1924 a new judicial building was moved into the intersection of Freiheitstraße / Alleestrasse.
insights into the exhibition
In the exhibition, not only the history of the district court is illuminated, but also bizarre stories from previous legal proceedings, especially in Ronsdorf in the 19th century. These stories complement the historical perspective with humorous anecdotes. However, the legendary youth judge Rolf Söhnchen, who was active in the 1990s and 2000s, had a special influence, but it was decided not to include his procedures in the exhibition.
The opening of the exhibition "100 years of the district court of Remscheid" will take place on May 9th at 11 a.m. The exhibition is open during the regular opening times of the court and offers the public an opportunity to find out about the development of this institution. Dr. Künzel and his team organized the exhibits with a lot of effort to enable the citizens to travel through Remscheid's judicial history.
