Jan Ullrich celebrates comeback at the Cycling Festival after a serious accident!

At the "Jan-Ullrich Cycling Festival" in Bad Dürrheim, the participants had the opportunity to catch a rare view of the former professional cyclist Jan Ullrich. The 51-year-old was present despite a recent accident in which he was hit by a car. Ullrich expressed his joy that he can be here that day while he was wearing his left arm in a loop. He was released from the Hospital in Freiburg on Thursday and has now focused at the opening of a new dirt bike park for children and young people.

The accident that Ullrich searched for a week ago led to a broken collarbone, bruises and skin abrasions. In a podcast entitled "Ulle & Rick", he described how he was hit head -on by a driver who had obviously overlooked him. Due to his injuries, Ullrich will not be able to take part in the hobby tour on Sunday, which was actually very important to him.

accident statistics and security problems

The dangers for cyclists in road traffic are unmistakable. According to Tagesschau there were 444 fatal accidents from cyclists in 2024, which is 33 less than in 2023, but is an increase in a ten-year comparison. Around 70.7 percent of the 92,882 bicycle accidents with personal injury ended in collisions with cars, with drivers carried the main debt in 75.3 percent of the cases.

It is particularly alarming that 43.5 percent of the fatally injured cyclists drove e-bikes, which is almost five times more than a decade ago. These figures illustrate how important it is to increase safety in road traffic, especially for seniors. Almost two thirds of the fatally injured cyclists were over 65 years old.

The situation for cyclists who are traveling on conventional bicycles is also worrying. The proportion of the accidental seniors without electrical support was 59.4 percent, while this proportion rose to 68.8 percent in e-bikes. The statistics show that a total of 2,759 people died in road traffic in 2024, which is 18.3 percent less than ten years ago. Nevertheless, the number of fatally crashed cyclists grows by 11.4 percent compared to 2014.
