A tragic chain reaction in traffic caused unimaginable sadness in Braunschweig today. On the federal highway B4 several vehicles were involved in a serious traffic accident in which three people, all Croatian citizens, lost their lives. The police tried to stop a vehicle on the A2 motorway on Saturday around 1 p.m. The driver ignored the request and sped away at excessive speed. Around ten minutes later, the emergency call came in about a serious accident on the B4, which occurred not far from the Braunschweig-Nord motorway junction, where the A391 merges into the B4.
Details of the accident
As the investigation has shown so far, the driver of the getaway car, a BMW with a Munich license plate, overtook three vehicles and skidded. The BMW then collided with an oncoming VW before falling off the bridge into the Mittelland Canal. Three passengers, two men aged 25 and 31, died immediately at the scene, while the identity of the third fatality remains unclear, reports Daily Mirror.
The two injured people from the VW, a 47-year-old man from Hamburg and a 53-year-old man, suffered serious or life-threatening injuries and had to be taken to hospital in a rescue helicopter.
Rescue and recovery operations
Following the accident, the B4 was completely closed near the Mittelland Canal. The rescue service, fire department and several rescue helicopters were on site to treat the injured and rescue the deceased. A special recovery ship from Hanover was deployed because one of the bodies was floating on the surface of the water while the other two occupants were trapped in the vehicle. Divers from the professional fire department had to go into the canal to train the deceased until the wreckage was recovered, according to reports NDR.
The case is expected to be handed over to the public prosecutor, who will decide whether an autopsy of the dead is necessary. The vehicle, which will soon be intensively examined by the police, could provide important information about the cause of the accident.
