Ski World Cup 2025: DSV team fights for precious metal despite failures!
The anticipation for the Alpine Ski World Championship increases, while the German ski team remains optimistic despite the balanced season and injury-related failures. From Weser Kurier is reported that the team has the goal of being on the podium at least twice. The World Cup will take place in Saalbach-Hinterglemm from February 4th to 16th.
As head of sports at the German Ski Association, Wolfgang Maier expressed that both trainers and athletes are aware of the challenges. Nevertheless, they look at the upcoming competitions with hope. In particular, the 2021 World Cup is mentioned as a positive example where the team only recorded three podiums before the competitions, but surprisingly won four medals in Cortina d’Ampezzo.
The starting point for the team
The DSV team starts in Saalbach-Hinterglemm as an outsider, as Maier in an interview with Sportschau explained. Realistically, the team does not count the medal favorites. At the moment Lena Dürr is the only athlete who was already on the podium this season, while Linus Straßer and Emma Aicher were close to podium placements.
Despite the current situation, the DSV avoids clear medal requirements, but still has the ambition to achieve at least one medal for both women and men. The athletes are motivated and willing to give everything, even if the possibilities are limited due to the failures.
expectations and new competitions
Maier hopes for surprises at the World Cup, as it is often important for individual services. A new team competition will be debut that combines slalom and downhill drivers. The DSV plans to compete with three teams in this competition, provided that all athletes are healthy. The hope of that other top nations will not necessarily use their best athletes in this competition.
The start of the World Cup takes place with a team parallel event that will take place on Tuesday at 3:15 p.m. (broadcast by ARD and Eurosport). In the past few years, the German team has often been successful in this event and was able to win a silver medal at the 2022 Olympic Games.
historical medal balance
A good medal balance is of crucial importance for the success of a team. According to Sportlexikon , the medal mirror is observed closely at the alpine World Ski Championship. Gold medals have the highest value followed by silver and bronze. Switzerland and Norway were often dominant at last world championships.
So Switzerland won a total of 7 medals at the Alpine World Ski Championships 2023 in Courchevel/Meribel, including 3 gold medals. Austria, although mostly acted as a favorite, could be happy about 7 medals in the same championship, but without gold. A result that shows that everything is possible during sports and surprises can occur at any time.
The German team is confident about the upcoming races, with the clear goal of fighting medals in Saalbach-Hinterglemm and possibly again to provide positive surprises.
