Unemployment in the Weserbergland is falling: Good news for skilled workers!

You could say that something is happening in the Weserbergland - and not just in an economic sense. The current unemployment figures show an encouraging decline. In October 2025, the number of unemployed fell to 12,889, a decrease of 276 compared to the previous month, reported Holzminden News. This decline is recorded in the districts of Hameln-Pyrmont, Holzminden and Schaumburg, where the unemployment rate is below the previous year's level.

The situation in the Hameln-Pyrmont district is particularly noteworthy with 5,267 unemployed and a rate of 6.7%. In the Schaumburg district, 5,145 people are unemployed, which corresponds to a rate of 6.1%. The Holzminden district currently has 2,477 unemployed people (6.9%). Gerhard Durchstecher, head of the Hameln employment agency, emphasizes how important solid vocational training is in order to counteract unemployment.

The importance of training

The search for suitable skilled workers in the Weserbergland is not only an issue among employers, but also an opportunity for young people. “Around 80% of the vacancies are intended for skilled workers,” says Durchstecher. Cornelia Kurth, team leader of career advice in the Schaumburg district, calls for you to definitely take advantage of the numerous training positions that are available in a wide variety of areas, such as plant mechanics or dental assistants the employment agency communicates.

In-company training not only promotes the professional development of young people, but also means that they are less likely to become unemployed and are reintegrated into the labor market more quickly. Jens Auberg, team leader of career advice in the Holzminden and Hameln-Pyrmont districts, recommends finding out about the more than 300 dual training occupations in Germany.

Training places and opportunities

The current situation shows that there are mathematically more training places than applicants. Nevertheless, 1,082 unplaced applicants are looking for an apprenticeship. According to employment agency data, 1,419 training positions in the Weserbergland are still unfilled. The “Summer of Vocational Training” training offensive has already shown some progress, but demand does not always match supply.

Another focus is on the inclusion of people with disabilities. This topic will be discussed as part of the press discussions that will take place at the agency locations in Hameln and Holzminden. The Inclusion Award for 2025 will be awarded on December 3rd, People with Disabilities Day. Suggestions for award winners are currently being accepted until November 10th.

By and large, the job market in the Weserbergland is on the rise. The developments in unemployment figures are hopeful and the range of training opportunities offers young people the chance for a secure professional future.
