In Osterholz-Scharmbeck, the citizens are eagerly awaiting the completion of the newly designed Brigitte-Escherhausen-Platz, which is now scheduled to last until mid-December 2023. The square, affectionately known as “Shoebox Square”, extends over around 400 square meters and is being redesigned according to plans by the Hamburg office for landscape architecture and urban planning Grabner, Huber, Lipp. Particular attention is paid to creating green islands and a water feature in the center to increase the quality of stay and create space for small events.
Current construction work and renovations
The construction work, which has been carried out by the gardening and landscaping company Jacobs since mid-March 2023, also includes the redesign of the surrounding area. The square extends to the building facades at Kirchenstrasse 16 and 18, where the optician and ice cream parlor are located. The neighboring pedestrian zone will also be part of the redesign measures.
It is particularly important that the shops remain accessible. However, delivery traffic is currently blocked between house numbers 11b and 15 on Kirchenstrasse, which makes logistics somewhat more difficult. Pedestrians can still cross the area, and the DRK shop and the courtyard parking lot are directly accessible from Kirchenstrasse.
Financing and prospects
This ambitious transformation is being financed through urban development funding from the “Living Centers” program. The aim is not only to improve traffic aspects, but also to create a more attractive city center. The aim is to establish the square as a lively place in the heart of Osterholz-Scharmbeck.
