Osterholz-Scharmbeck celebrates: Janning Licht wins silver in rowing!

Janning Licht from the Osterholz-Scharmbeck rowing club did it: He secured the silver medal at the German U17 championships, which recently took place at Fühlinger See in Cologne. His team, the eight from Lower Saxony, competed in an exciting competition against strong competition and only had to admit defeat to the Hamburg team. Weser-Kurier reports that this success was worth it for the RV OSCH athletes and coaches, after impressive performances in previous regattas in Bremen, Cologne and Hamburg qualified for the final.

The trainers of the successful boat, Martin Ramm from Otterndorf and Mathis Dierksmeier from Osnabrück, praised their team's preparation. In the first heat, the Lower Saxony team appeared confident. After a somewhat bumpy start, they gained a lead of two boat lengths by the 1000 meter mark. They won the direct competition for the best times with the team from Essen, Duisburg, Hamm and Minden with a veritable gap of 3.07 seconds.

A head-to-head race for the title

In the final of the championship, the spectators experienced a thrilling head-to-head race that remained exciting up to the 1000 meter mark. Only in the last 500 meters did the Hamburg team pull away slightly and ultimately win with a lead of 2.68 seconds. Despite the narrow defeat, the Lower Saxony team and RV OSCH were very happy about their performance. Coach Youri Steeneck even described the runner-up title as the club's greatest success in the U17 sector in the last 25 years.

In Germany, rowing has developed steadily over the centuries. According to Wikipedia, today's form of racing rowing dates back to the 18th century in England. The first known regatta was held on the Thames in 1775, and soon afterwards the first German rowing club, “The Hamburg Rowing Club”, was founded in 1836. A little later, in 1882, the first German rowing championship took place in Frankfurt am Main, which was initially only held in men's single sculls.

The tradition of German rowing

So the championship has changed a lot. A lot has happened from the first competitions in 1882 to today, when major events are also organized for women and young athletes. Similar to the case of RV OSCH, which was able to show what it was made of this year, many rowing clubs have made a name for themselves in German rowing through hard work and commitment. It is interesting to note that the current succession of the German Rowing Association goes back to the founding meeting on March 18, 1883 in Cologne, where numerous rowing clubs came together to promote the sport Rudern.de.

The success of Janning Licht and his team is another example of the vibrant rowing tradition in Germany. This silver medal reflected not only the athletes' abilities, but also the hard work of the coaches and the dedication of the entire club. It will be exciting to see what successes the future holds for the RV OSCH rowers!
