Heroic act on Lake Salzgitter: rescuers save exhausted student in triathlon!
Lake Salzgitter, a lively attraction for those seeking relaxation, sports enthusiasts and families, is in focus after an incident at the annual student triathlon that took place on June 26th. Here, fifth and sixth graders competed against each other while the sun shone from the sky and the participants jumped to the water with shining eyes.
But in the middle of the competition, an unforeseen moment occurred: a student showed clear symptoms of exhaustion while swimming. She clung to a turning buoy and then sank into the water while rowing her arms uncontrollably, according to the DLRG Salzgitter Lebenstedt. Two lifeguards quickly responded and jumped into the water to help her. They reached the girl, who was able to hold on to a rescue belt, and brought her safely to shore. After a short medical examination, she was safely released into the care of her mother. The rest of the competition continued peacefully under bright skies, and spectators showed a lot of support for the rescue workers on social media.
The student triathlon at a glance
For many schools, Lake Salzgitter is also a very special place that is regularly used for sporting competitions. The student triathlon has now become an integral part of the calendar year and not only offers students the opportunity to get involved in sports, but also attracts numerous spectators.
The triathlon was well organized and began in the morning with the distribution of the starting documents. Many participants waited impatiently for the starting signal, which came in several waves:
- 11:15 Uhr: Start Triathlon Oberliga Niedersachsen Herren
- 11:20 Uhr: Start Triathlon Oberliga Niedersachsen Damen
- 11:30 Uhr: Start Triathlon Mixed-Liga Niedersachsen
Safe swimming skills are crucial
The triathlon incident highlights an important topic: the importance of swimming and appropriate swimming badges. According to the DLRG, these badges demonstrate skills and knowledge of technical swimming. There are different badges such as the bronze, silver and gold badges that ensure that someone can actually swim. In particular, the well-known seahorse, which is often offered as a first step, does not protect against being supervised while swimming. The requirements for swimming badges are clear: they are a sign of safe swimming, regardless of the swimmer's age.
This makes it clear that events like the student triathlon not only offer top sporting performance, but also raise awareness of safety in and around the water. With this in mind, we can only hope that Lake Salzgitter will continue to be a place for unforgettable experiences in the future - of course always with the safety of the young athletes in mind.
